MASON DRIVES THE X1 TO A
5TH PLACE FINISH!
By
Gary Thomas
Petaluma, CA – September 15, 2008…Competing aboard the
Friends & Family Racing No. x1 sprinter for the very first
time on Saturday night at the Petaluma Speedway, Princeton’s
Mason Moore proceeded to put together a solid night of
competition as he qualified well and tallied a fifth place
finish in the feature to score his second consecutive top five
in Civil War 360 Series action.
Moore went into this past Saturday’s event following a season
best fourth place finish with the Civil War Series during the
prestigious Pacific Sprint Invitational on September 3, and
looked to continue the momentum while driving the Alan Bradway/Steve
Tuccelli owned machine at the always tacky Petaluma Speedway.
A total of 33 cars were on hand for the third to last Civil War
event of the season and Moore kicked off the night by timing in
solidly with the fifth quickest lap of the evening aboard the
Roseville Precision, Merit Logistics No. x1. After qualifying
however, the track seemed to get heavier and it made passing
opportunities tough to come by in the heat races. Moore lined-up
in the third row of the night’s opening heat and when the
green flag flew he fell into line sixth, where he would
eventually finish to put him into the B-main.
The drivers who qualified second and third also failed to
transfer through the heat races so it put Moore on the inside of
the second row for the 12 lap semi. The 17 year-old settled into
third during the early laps and had a couple peeks at second
place Andy Gregg, but wasn’t able to get by and drove smartly
over the final handful of circuits to hang on to third and
transfer the Levin’s Auto Supply, Sierra Single Ply No. x1
into the main event.
After doing a little track maintenance the main event rolled
onto the speedway and it saw Moore line-up from the inside of
the fourth row in the seventh starting position. The typical
hooked-up Petaluma Speedway track surface was seen and it made
for some very exciting racing throughout the 30 lap contest.
Moore spent much of the race dicing it up right around the fifth
position and as the laps wound down he found himself in a
dogfight for a top five spot with veteran Colby Wiesz.
The youngster was able to do a great job though and kept Wiesz
at bay as he drove the F & F Racing, Wiley X Eyewear
sprinter under the checkered flag in the fifth position to score
his second top five finish in a row with the Civil War Series.
“It was a lot of fun to drive for the F & F Racing team
tonight and it felt great to be able to get them a top five in
the feature,” Moore said. “The track was racy in the main
event, we had a good time and I’d love to be able to race this
car more often as the season goes on.”
Moore is scheduled to take this coming weekend off before
resuming action during the California Civil War Series season
finale at the Placerville Speedway on September 27, in an
attempt to get geared up for the 17th annual Pacific
Sprint Fall Nationals, which will be held on October 2-4 at the
Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
